Are You Looking for a Job... or Building a Career?

When someone contacts me for help, one of the first questions I ask isn't about their résumé.

It's this:

Are you looking for a job... or are you building a career?

At first, those questions may sound like they mean the same thing.

They don't.

Getting a job is often about meeting an immediate need. You need income, stability, or a fresh start. There's nothing wrong with that.

Building a career is different.

It's about deciding where you want to go before you decide where to apply.

Too often, people spend hours submitting applications without asking themselves whether those positions truly fit their strengths, interests, or long-term goals. They become so focused on getting hired that they never stop to ask if they're pursuing the right opportunity.

A résumé can help you tell your story.

But it can't tell you which story you're trying to write.

That's why, before we talk about formatting, keywords, or cover letters, I want to understand you.

• What kind of work gives you a sense of purpose?

• What skills come naturally to you?a

• What have people consistently trusted you to do?

• What kind of life are you trying to build through your career?

Those answers matter because careers aren't built by accident. They're built through thoughtful decisions, preparation, and a clear understanding of the value you bring.
